Louisville (usually pronounced /ˈluː.ǝvǝl/; see Pronunciation below) is Kentucky's largest city and county seat of Jefferson County. Since 2003, the city's borders are coterminous with those of the county due to merger. The city's estimated population as of 2008 is 713,877 (consolidated; balance total is 557,224), with a population of 1,268,323 in the Louisville metropolitan area. Louisville is most famous as the home of "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports": the Kentucky Derby, the widely watched first race of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing.
